Semmes Elects Two New Principals

Semmes, Bowen & Semmes is pleased to announce that Brett S. Lininger and James S. Maloney have been elected Principals of the Firm, effective January 1, 2013.

Brett S. Lininger is a member of the Lobbying & Government Relations and Corporate & Business practice groups in Semmes' Baltimore Office. His legal practice focuses on insurance regulatory and transactional matters as well as general business issues. Mr. Lininger has degrees from Towson University and the University of Baltimore School of Law.

 

James S. Maloney is a member of the Workers' Compensation & Employers' Liability practice group in Semmes' Baltimore and Hagerstown, Maryland Offices. He represents employers, insurers and third party administrators in the defense of workers' compensation matters in Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Mr. Maloney holds a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Villanova University and earned his law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

NEWS | Alexander Giles Elected To The Board of Directors For The Maritime Law Association Of The United States (MLA)

Alexander Giles, a principal with Semmes’ Maritime & Business Litigation Practice Group, was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Maritime Law Association of the United States (MLA). Mr. Giles will serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors, a body that is comprised of the elected Officers of the Association and twelve elected Board members and whose responsibility it is to govern the Association.

Mr. Giles also currently serves as the Vice Chair of the MLA’s Marine Ecology & Criminal Law Committee, and he has previously served as the Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee and as a member of the MLA’s Planning & Arrangements Committee.

The Maritime Law Association of the United States was founded in 1899. According to its Articles of Incorporation, "the objectives of the Association shall be to advance reforms in the Maritime Law of the United States, to facilitate justice in its administration, to promote uniformity in its enactment and interpretation, to furnish a forum for the discussion and consideration of problems affecting the Maritime Law and its administration, to participate as a constituent member of the Comite Maritime International and as an affiliated organization of the American Bar Association, and to act with other associations in efforts to bring about a greater harmony in the shipping laws, regulations and practices of different nations."

NEWS | "When Baltimore was Convention Central" By Stan M. Haynes

Baltimore has a rich history as the site of numerous presidential nominating conventions. This summer, the city marks the century anniversary of the last convention that it hosted. In June of 1912, the Democratic Party met in Baltimore and, after a contentious convention that last for more than a week, nominated Woodrow Wilson for the presidency. NEWS | Important Changes to IDOT Recordation Taxes in Maryland

During the Special Session held on May 14-16 of this year, the General Assembly passed a budget bill that includes a considerable limitation on the widely used deferral of recordation taxes on Indemnity Deeds of Trust (IDOTs). Governor O’Malley signed the bill into law on May 22, 2012.

The new law, which will apply to all IDOTs recorded on or after July 1, 2012, imposes recordation tax on IDOTs securing loans of $1 million or more to the same extent that recordation tax would be imposed on a deed of trust or mortgage granted by the borrower. Recordation tax rates range from approximately ½ percent to just over 1 percent depending upon the jurisdiction in which the real property is located. Full Article

ALM, publisher of Corporate Counsel and The National Law Journal, has named Semmes, Bowen & Semmes as a 2012 Go-To Law Firm® for Litigation. ALM conducted a comprehensive survey of in-house counsel at 500 leading companies. Additionally, ALM’s research sources included public records, leading publications and commercial databases in developing and publishing the annual Go-To Law Firms® list.
